CxO: Deter. Detect. Defend. Document.

When you become a new CSO, CISO or COO in your growing Fortune 1000 organization, it all starts to become more clear to you.

In decades past, as we worked with transnational law firms up and down Wilshire Boulevard, you could not possibly know in advance, where and how the next major Board-Level issue was going to raise itself to the top of the clients crisis priority list.

Until the minute, hour, day of the month that it actually happened. Was it a surprise corporate incident that is now in the Yellow zone, Orange zone or Red zone?

The pre-9/11 days of Operational Risk Management in the Defense-Industrial-Base companies around the 495 beltway in Tysons Corner, included slow moving, more visible threats to the enterprise, such as severe weather patterns or a forecasted economic recession. There were just a few digital e-mail viruses that popped up on the Internet and grew exponentially that could become a nuisance.

Two decades later working along side the OPS Risk professionals inside large global enterprises in 2022, requires a more detailed and wide spectrum of analytics capability to truly survive.

In early encounters with struggling CxOs we encountered a People, Processes, Systems and External Events matrix, that was in need of real-time relevant updates.

What if you started your journey of excellence today, with just one relevant threat vector named “Ransomware” to excel:

  • Critical infrastructures are those systems and assets-whether Physical or Virtual – that are considered so vital to the United States that their incapacitation or destruction would have a debilitating effect on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination of those matters.
  • As ransomware attacks continue to grow, organizations need to improve their security posture to protect against an attack. Better security requires implementing appropriate security controls and ensuring that effective crisis management and employee education are in place.
  • The landscape of how we work has changed since the onset of the global pandemic. We must today assess vulnerabilities in a new way and with increased due diligence.
  • The cost of a cyber attack is often significant for organizations large and small, and we must strengthen our responsiveness and continuously reduce behaviors that may open vulnerabilities in the future.

This decade, our CxO focus shall evolve on a myriad of “Pre-Incident” indicators and towards our massive data analytics capabilities, to see over the threat horizons towards your organizations most relevant priorities.

You see, the speed and stealth of the modern day adversary has advanced to a whole new threshold, far beyond human sight. Beyond our range of hearing. Now invisible to the naked eye.

Our Corporate Critical Assets still remain "Under Attack".

4D = Deter. Detect. Defend. Document.

"Attackers use Tools to exploit Vulnerabilities. They create an Action on a target that produces an Unauthorized result."

Attackers do this, to obtain their Objective.

As a 2022 CxO in this day and age, you must accelerate to a 24x7 set of TrustDecisions that Deter, Detect, Defend and Document (4D) your rapidly changing Operational Risk Management (ORM) environments...

OPS Risk: 7 Revolutions on our Horizon…

The holiday season is almost upon us. One only has to look into the mirror of 2022 to see the trajectory of our world.

Our digital globe is preparing itself for the next major breakpoint in its history of commerce and business.

Our organizations are in anarchy and the consumers of our products and services are shifting before our eyes.

You only have to look back on the past years major headlines of the Washington Post to gain some perspective on where we are headed in the next 12 months.

Social consciousness is seeping into the workplace and management is keenly aware of the accelerating change factors on the corporate doorstep for 2023-24.

Several new waves of incremental change are upon us. As providers of products and services to the consumers of the planet, whether businesses or individuals, the writing is on the walls of the corporate boardroom: Survive.

The tides of change are now upon us. Look no further than the Seven Revolutions Initiative. [See 7 Revs] The social, technological and demographic facets are enough to make anyone wonder where we are all headed in the next 20 years.

Our Critical Infrastructure industries are putting the building blocks in place to sustain a dramatic shift in who their customers are today and whom they will be tomorrow.

2023 will be another year of corporate malfeasance, seeded with wondrous accounts of incivility. Spawned by the empowered employee to become a whistle blower and a bold new generation of inside crime fighters.

Our generations of young workers and consumers on this planet will pay for something they can believe in, rather than something that is socially and morally bankrupt.

They will work all day in the global banking software development department and work late into the night, developing the next binary code to impress their peers on the other side of the world developing the latest ransomware on the Internet.

They will design the new marketing campaign for the next gas guzzling 4-wheel drive SUV by day and ride home that same evening in their brand new foreign hybrid using electric power.

2023 will be a year of heightened sensitivity to security and exponential asymmetric warfare.

Our dated processes and systems will be adjusted and tweaked to accommodate the planets morphing threats by a new force of true “Innovation Navigators.”

The Board Room Buzz will be more about how to protect those vital corporate assets and simultaneously how to survive our next crisis.

What may be most interesting, is how the governments of the world now cooperate to become more of a global partner on this front.

We sense already a growing cooperation among world leaders to deter and defend our citizens from the spread of a tyrants fear and uncertainty.

Finally, 2023 will be another year we find greater appreciation for:

  • The evening glimmer of sunlight across a body of clean water. The wave from the neighbor who lives next door or across the street.
  • Our faith in what or whomever we believe in. Those who serve, so we can remain free of threats or illness, to our loved ones and our own well-being.
  • The signs that our bodies are healthy. The hope that exists in all of us, for finding a greater peace of mind.

In 2023 and beyond, look with fresh eyes on everyday things…

“Ductus Exemplo”: A Veterans Day Memory...

Veterans Day in the United States today is celebrated for many enduring thoughts and a single reason.

Freedom.

Yet today, you might remember a single time or place where it all comes back to you and then you smile.

We had just finished our tour of the U.S. Marine Corps museum near Marine Corps Base Quantico (MCBQ) in Virginia. Richard was the First Lieutenant that taught me many skills and lessons in life and he was so joyful as we pulled out of the parking lot.

Then it hit him, the entrance Gate to the MCBQ base was just visible to our right and he barks his command: Turn Right Here!

“Got to go see old Brown Field and where we went for Officer Candidate School (OCS)”

As we approached the Guard Station, there was building anticipation of what to say and what would happen if we were declined entry.

The driver side window rolled down and now it was our time to explain: “This U.S. Marine would like to take a ride through to see Brown Field once again and where he attended OCS, sir.”

“Let me see your Drivers Licenses.” The guard looked us over, glanced into the back seat and then said: “OK, go ahead.”

Marine officers are the embodiment of the Corps and the school’s motto, “Ductus Exemplo”, which means ‘lead by example…

As the son of a U.S. Marine, there are eight plus decades of learning and understanding why my Dad Richard, was so focused on “Ductus Exemplo” in our family.

The quick tour of Brown Field was a success that day and my appreciation for what he learned to become, was now more vivid in my mind.

Our bed was made every morning. Mowing the front yard lawn was completed after school before sun set on every summer Michigan Friday. Our driveway was cleared of snow by 9am the morning after the “Grand Tetons” storm had passed.

He always exemplified who he had become at Brown Field and then Parris Island, training and caring for his fellow U.S. Marines as a Second Lieutenant.

He went on in his life to become a family man with a daughter and three sons, a dedicated husband and business executive, plus a scratch golfer. His Country Club Championship trophies adorned my clothes dresser as a kid.

Veterans Day is truly about our continued Freedoms.

It is also about those leaders in our country, whose service continues long after they receive their DD Form 214 Discharge Papers and Separation Documents.

This U.S. Marine Richard passed away at the age of 86. We will never forget you!

“Semper Fidelis”…Always faithful!

Teams: "Innovation Navigators" Across America...

As our four teams of two, finished their final presentations of the prototypes they had designed and developed over the past month, we could all see the smiles of accomplishment. Of the pride on their faces, as the sun begins to set on the West coast.

This small patriotic group of “Innovation Navigators” were now ready for the next phase of their National Security Cohort methodology. To implement and test their outcomes in our respective geographic metro areas of the United States.

Sector Teams from Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and San Diego. All major centers of our economic force and with substantial Critical Infrastructure entities to protect and increase their resilience to a spectrum of Operational Risks.

"Building Awareness of the need to change is now their primary mission. Their opportunity to recruit, educate, network and share vital information."

The people in their Areas of Responsibility (AOR) will soon have greater awareness, of the need to change.

Soon thereafter, they will have the desire to participate and support the change. They will gain knowledge on how to change.

They will learn the process to implement desired skills and achieve new behaviors.

Our “Team of Teams” will embark on their mission of reinforcement to sustain the change.

The journey they have just completed over the past 30 days has provided them new insights. It has created new relationships.

The outcomes are just the results of their purpose for joining the team, yet the new dialogue, challenges and new colleagues are what is most rewarding.

Creating something “New” as a small team that helps to solve a “National Security” problem-set is the true outcome.

What endures are the trusted relationships. This becomes the most valuable asset we attain together.

How might you and your team become “Innovation Navigators” to make a difference and serve a vital purpose in our nation?

November in the United States is always a renewed focus on our Veterans, on our National Security and Defense including our domestic Critical Infrastructure Protection.

As you gaze at our U.S. Flag and say the “Pledge of Allegiance” or listen to Taps, wipe that tear from the corner of your eye.

Now get out there and make a difference…Onward!

Experiential Learning: Beyond Our Borders...

Have you ever found yourself walking down a sidewalk or path somewhere in the United States of America, curious about what your journey ahead will discover?

In 1974, the country was in a different era of change. Walking down towards campus on “The Hill” in Boulder that crisp September Fall, the clan of Hare Krishnas were in front of the book store dancing and expressing their heritage in dress and song.

The Vietnam War was winding down and 58,000+ Americans had made the ultimate sacrifice.

The next four years was going to be full of extreme “Experiential Learning”.

Whether it was navigating the problem-sets of achieving a B.A. in International Affairs within the famous University of Colorado - IAFS Program in the College of Arts & Sciences department, or exploring the favorite steep mountain trails on the weekends, there would be many new challenges ahead.

While taking a full load of International academics, pledging one of the leading national Fraternities and earning a spot on the NCAA Div I National Championship (20) Ski Team (B), the chance to learn the “Art of Leadership” in real-time became achievable.

By the end of those 4 years, it was now time to leave the collegiate experiential learning and to become curious and to explore our world of business.

You can try to put your USA life in context by reading books and visiting a few states, yet you must get out of our country to really learn and understand our nation even better.

Journeys to Canada, Mexico, France, Australia, South Africa, Italy, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Switzerland has provided significant insight and a more full understanding of our global mosaic. That is just the beginning.

How might you travel our world working and/or vacationing to increase your knowledge and experience to learn what it is like to be an “American”, visiting another country?

In your future, whenever you have the opportunity to have a dialogue with a new acquaintance, ask them to find out their personal level of global context.

Ask them about their particular experiences with living and exploring new and different cultures, while seeing and witnessing something new outside the USA.

So what?

Our global world is not only vast in its geography, it is deep in history and worthy of our true “Experiential Learning”.

Get out of your own neighborhood. Out of your State. Get out of your Country.

Increase your own context on the “What”, “Where”, “How” and just maybe you can start your understanding of the “Why”.

Whether it is Paris, Geneva, Sydney, Cape Town, Rome, Berlin, London, Dublin, Edinburgh, Kabul, Abu Dhabi or exploring the hiking trails above the Virginia USA Potomac River outside Washington, DC, get out there and increase your global experiences.

Better understand and learn what makes our world, what it has now become in 2022. Gain new international context. Feel what it truly means, to be an "American"...

Complacency: Zeros & Ones of Safety...

How might you increase your own resilience to known potential risks in your business operations or even personally this week, or this month?

We all know that growing up, Mom and Dad would teach us, “Don’t talk to strangers”. “Don’t play with matches”. “Wear your seat belt”. Why?

Even a U.S. President is famous for his quote: “Trust But Verify”.

Our life long history of financial transactions and your own personal biometric identity, has made its way online and into the Zeros and Ones digital realms of the U.S. government, Google, Amazon, Apple, Nordstroms and even Netflix.

The single phone number and the e-mail address you have retained for a decade or more, tells almost your entire life story. Where, What, When. How.

In the years past, as you were experiencing all the new mobile technologies and digital services available to you, remember that so too, are the “Nation States” and the “International Criminal Syndicates.

You, the “Human Being” operator, are the single greatest risk to your business and your family safety.

Is it possible that your own personality traits are being exploited by commercial enterprises? Yes.

Is it conceivable that every time you provide a phone number at your retail check out stand to gain rewards, that this contributes to your profiling by Artificial Intelligence (Ai) algorithms with Data Brokers? Yes.

Your business organizations safety and your own families potential vulnerabilities to a spectrum of Operational Risks, are continuously at stake.

When will you make a commitment to change your behavior and to build a discipline that endures and increases your resilience at work and at home?

So what?

If you as a Mother or Father, or Brother or Sister have ever said, “You can’t have a phone until you are 13,” then you have a personal and vital life opportunity before you.

If our own society that is visible in our own cities and geography, has evidence of rising risk and lower levels of personal safety, you might think of our vast searchable World Wide Web as just the top of the “Iceberg”.

However, 90% as you may know, is below the surface and not visible, also known as the “Dark Web”.

"Yet most average users of corporate business networks have little insight into the growing losses from ransomware. A review of 2021 8-K filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reveals a more complete picture of the financial damage from ransomware." CSO Online by Cynthia Brumfield

It all begins with a click in an e-mail or text message, from those behind the curtain, or below the surface, utilizing their “Social Engineering” processes across millions of users profiles, purchased somewhere on the Dark Web.

Personal Profiles built and donated as a result of your own activities and actions. Why do you think that the “Digital Forensics” industry is booming?

So what is the solution? How can the growing threat ever be minimized?

It begins here. Less complacent attitudes and behavior in the Board Room and the Family Room is our only hope. It is our only proactive solution towards true resilience.

Just Remember. Don’t play with matches or digital unknowns. Teach someone else the same...

Mosaic: Launching New Solution Navigators…

There are countless people and organizations who are articulating the problems that exist in your agency, your business or your non-profit.

Some international entrepreneurs are assisting those who have not developed their own concept selection and development team with solving the identified and validated problems.

The challenge in most entities has been enough resources and the correct people dedicated to defining the problem-sets and then applying a proven methodology for creating a solution space with a mission to deliver potential prototypes for testing.

How fast does your organization move from “Problem Definitions” to “Deliverable Solutions” ?

Well that is going to depend on what business or industry you are competing in across your geographic area. Are you in a small business? A regional enterprise. The national leader in ordering stuff online made by someone else and then delivering it to your customers household doorsteps?

Or are you in a services institution that invents and delivers new process designs. New intellectual capital. New creative ideas. New real-time OSINT information.

Moving from a past historical era where “Problem-space to “Solution-space” may take years, now our 2022 world is witnessing this time line whittled down to days, hours or even seconds.

In our current digital environment, utilizing Quantum capabilities, the problem may be solved in a minute or a second or two.

If you are trying to launch the next space craft to the Moon or Mars or beyond, it could take longer.

Yet what does all of this focus on true innovation really mean to “John Q. Citizen”?

So what?

Do you remember the first time you used Mosaic? What about the Netscape Navigator?

If you do remember, then you have a substantial set of real context on the topic of and history of creative innovation. Solving real-problems.

You actually understand and witnessed the speed at which people are capable of creating “New”.

Defining problem-sets to creating new solution-sets was a daily process for all of those "Digital Navigators" with electronic keyboards and modems in the early 1990’s.

Utilizing our Earths new World Wide Web technologies and capabilities, provided so many with the ability to explore, experiment and test, then to deliver new product solutions for those who did not even know they had a problem yet.

For those so interested in the future of our world and so eager to be innovators in 2022, sometimes you just have to study the past for a lesson. Maybe even read up on Mosaic on Wikipedia.

This journey has been epic. Now get out there and “Do” what you have a passion for and that will make a difference on this rock!

New Arrival: Curious Destinations...

When is it time to initiate a new strategic change in your future path of direction?

If you are feeling the calling away or the ambition to take on new challenges, then make your course correction with little hesitation. Your new arrival.

Listen to your heart and the future that lies just over the next horizon in front of you. Give those others who you have coached and instructed for so many years, the opportunity to step into your leadership role.

This alone will spawn a few new and challenging opportunities for change and true innovation. How will you really know when you arrive?

By using your personal keen sense of observation and asking so many questions of your peers and new colleagues, you shall find your future.

While leaving many of the past challenges you were solving over the last years, now the use of your proven methodologies and substantial training will provide you with the future insights you will now require.

You will know that you have arrived at your new and intended destination, when the feeling of joy and sense of anticipation is so present and exciting.

Have you noticed how curious you have now become again?

Heading towards the unknown and taking the turns you have never navigated before this very moment.

Now start to imagine, what it will look and feel like when you are finally there, when you have finally arrived.

Look around and take in the new and exciting unfamiliar environment now appearing before you.

Cherish the positive and now such rewarding outcomes from your evolving solutions, from your active presence and your continuous learning.

"In America, we celebrate the virtues of the quiet hero--the modest man who does this duty without complaint or expectation of praise; the man who listens closely for the call of his country, and when she calls, he answers without reservation, not for fame or reward, but for love."
John McCain - This I Believe

Be well. We will see you on the other side…

Foresight: Circumspection as to Danger or Risk...

As you walk through your business office or around your organizations campus this week, how will you use foresight?

You have always had the ability to foresee and view looking forward, yet how effective have you applied this ability in your current environment?

The act or power of foreseeing is a skill that you can learn and utilize on a daily basis to your advantage. To increase your safety. To insure your security. To expand your prudence.

Are you operating each day in your work or even family activities without ever thinking about the future?

What if?

Do you ever ask yourself this question as you proceed into your day, your week or the next month or are you oblivious to the changing conditions, people, processes and behaviors externally developing around you?

Reactive people who are constantly surprised and organizations that are less than prepared for sudden change events, are ever more present.

Anticipating the future and using real-time sensory data to your advantage is just the baseline towards more effective individual prudence and continuous business foresight.

"The speed of life or the accelerating volumes of data streaming through the digital veins of your organization, just might have you overwhelmed and even distracted."

How might you and your team develop greater foresight and reduce the significant risks in your business future?

As a Team Leader, the answer begins with finding a very scarce commodity these days.

Time.

Let’s just start with 2 hours, across 4 consecutive weeks so 8 blocks of time.

The difference is, these two hours each week with your team shall be devoted to developing greater foresight.

Your skill and good judgement, in the use of resources while you apply this to caution or circumspection of danger or risk, will create a true difference.

Your facilitation of the process and methodology, insures your teams focus on using and applying foresight, in your particular areas of business operations or your teams specific responsibility.

The teams outcomes shall be applied and tested, measured and recorded to determine the true results. For 4 consecutive weeks, your "Business Foresight" and prudence will be rapidly growing. Now repeat in bi-annual sessions.

Your expanding corporate ability to govern and the discipline by the use of team reasoning will ensure a more safe and secure journey into the future…

ORM Tools: So Many Choices...So Little Time

As the software marketplace begins to mature with the newest systems for various facets of Operational Risk, how do you know what software tools are right for your organization?

For starters, there are dozens if not hundreds of specific tools on the market today for helping you manage everything from Risk and Control Self Assessments (RCSA), Supply Chain Risk to documenting processes for SOX 404 compliance.

"You can benefit from building your structures for processes, business strategy and tests for procedures. This still leaves many choices to evaluate and vendors who will flog you with powerpoints."

There are several key components of the ORM Framework Management that are essential when considering software tools to assist you:

Policy

Create security policies, standards and procedures, distribute them online, educate and train employees, and track compliance, exceptions and violations.

Threat

Comprehensive and customizable early warning system providing notification of physical and digital threats, vulnerabilities and malicious code to help prevent attacks before they affect the enterprise.

Assets

Manage enterprise assets such as buildings, vehicles, inventory, servers, applications or data centers and their relationships to ensure you are protecting your critical assets according to management expectations.

Risks

Perform online risk assessments to determine the proper controls to be implemented on specific assets based on their use and risk to the enterprise.

Incidents

Report incidents, manage their escalation, track investigations and analyze resolutions.

In evaluating the current information security, regulatory and legal environment, consider these five key flaws with today’s ORM software solution programs:

1. Dependence on inadequate and incomplete technology-based point solutions;

2. Failure to integrate people, process and systems into an effective operational risk program;

3. Lack of decision support and an actionable understanding of the threat to the entire spectrum of corporate assets;

4. Reactive response to perceived problems rather than proactive initiatives based on sound risk management principles; and

5. Cost and shortage of properly skilled IT personnel to suport the programs.

The Gartner Group has identified three major questions that executives and boards of directors need to answer when confronting significant issues:

  •  Is your policy enforced fairly, consistently and legally across the enterprise.
  •  Would our employees, contractors and partners know if a violation was being committed?
  •  Would they know what to do about it if they did recognize a violation?

If you don't know the answers to these questions then there is much more work to do and much more strategic planning necessary before any software system is implemented for Operational Risk Management...

Bifurcate: Future Missions of Success...

As you plan your next bold endeavor, your next work project or even your next life adventure how will you approach your process for success?

Some would sit down with their blank sheet of paper and sketch out a drawing first.

Others might use a tool for project management, a spreadsheet or a CRM to assist them in their approach to planning.

You will use the tools and the process you have been taught and learned to use through out your particular life time so far.

Remember that period of time in your life when the people you were working with, decided to go off and use a different process, a different tool or embark on a singular and selfish goal?

Have you ever found yourself recommending a particular process or tool to others for utilization in their team, that is never adopted by them or just ignored?

Your particular success utilizing a method or a process or tool must be articulated to the team with effective past stories.

You must show or demonstrate previous successful outcomes that are relevant to the current mission.

You see, your teams future performance will be more about your own leadership and how you tell the story of your successful past.

The methods and process you introduce, will have far greater adoption since the team sees and hears the evidence that you have tested and adapted, tested and failed, tested and found the correct tool(s), the best process.

The behavior of humans has been studied for centuries. The study of successful teams has been written about and documented for centuries.

What are you missing?

Mission and project success occurs when you realize that your team now understands why these “People”, what is the true “Objective”, why these “Methods” and what “Tools” are proven?

Now let’s go back to the story. How successful has your current story been working for you?

You know it is finally time to bifurcate when the performance curve is now on the unplanned trajectory.

Definition of bifurcate
transitive verb
: to cause to divide into two branches or parts
bifurcate a beam of light
intransitive verb
: to divide into two branches or parts

Break away soon from the main organization. Create a new course, a new path.  "Y."

Design and implement something "NEW".

Your journey ahead will now look so much brighter. You will become curious again.

Your teams successful outcomes will now be part of your new story...

Op_Pros: Achieving Singularity...

Our future depends on our ability to create new designs, new prototypes and then quickly deliver these to the end users on the front lines.

Author Peter Thiel in his book “Zero to One” articulates the challenge of our future. His insights are the modern day relevancy we all desperately need.

Stagnation or Singularity. What will be your destiny?

Economic competition and our future trends towards massive global disruptions requires our most vital organizations to find singular ways to improve and to discover “New”.

Our most coveted purpose has always brought us a daily motivation to excel. To think. To create. To test. To learn. To repeat.

A high risk mission that shall bring us so much closer to seeking out the real tasks that are critical to our collective future.

What emerging skills will be continuously required by humans to develop and test our new designs, prototypes and inventions?

How might we develop new tools and system methods to assist us along the challenging journey?

"Your particular group of “Operational Professionals” await the next challenges, new found problem-sets and purposeful tasks towards building our resilient futures."

Your specialized team shall assemble according to subject-matter-expertise that is focused on solving the true problem-set, integrated with specific geography experience where the prototype will be tested.

Over-The-Horizon (OTH) innovation within the walls of the historical institution of origin rarely is successful.

Our story truly begins when your “Operational Professionals” engage together beyond the organizational walls, away from the traditional rule-sets and together using the innovative new methods, real-time strategy and tactics to now move from “Zero to One”.

Your mission success will continuously rely upon the magnitude of your integrated skill-sets and relevant accuracy of the real-time information discovery.

The outcomes from obtaining your objectives and solving the problems identified will accelerate your abilities to find “New”.  To learn together as a unified team. To start the LOOP all over again with new insights and the metrics for future success.

What important truth, do “Very Few” people agree with you on?

Look beyond the near wall and into the far distance to imagine what you will achieve together…

Skills of Purpose: Active Learning in Life...

As a new dawn sun rises above the horizon across your own neighborhood in America, what is on your agenda today?

Are you living and working in survival mode? Wondering what to do next, as you care for others who are unable or too young or too old?

How much time will you devote to yourself in the next 24 hours or next week? Will you be learning a new skill, practicing a skill learned long ago or teaching your professional skills to someone else who will truly benefit?

skill noun
Definition of skill
1a : the ability to use one's knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance
b : dexterity or coordination especially in the execution of learned physical tasks
2 : a learned power of doing something competently : a developed aptitude or ability

Your ambition to learn a new skill or practice one that you learned long ago is a lost art.

In 2022, many neophytes believe that streaming YouTube or sitting quietly in a classroom, while a person in the front of the room presents their content and opinions to attempt to educate you, is the answer.

Skill building is so very different. It is proactive and the person in the course is actively “Doing” and practicing what is being demonstrated and taught by the instructors.

Skill building requires a professional instructor who not only has many years of “Doing” the same set of skills, yet also has the real ability to transfer those skills to others by utilizing their proven and active methodology.

Think about it. How did you learn your most precious and valuable skills in life? Who was your most favorite instructor? Why?

If you ever found yourself learning your new skills in the first few decades of your life at a professional School, an Institute, an Academy or on the Farm, you truly understand what active learning and true skill building is really all about.

You probably have some visible indicators of how you learned the wrong way to execute your new found skill.

You have now decided to continue to practice your new valuable skills. You will apply them to your work or profession and even will share what you have learned over decades with those others on your team who are now eager to learn.

How might you provide these same life skills to others you truly care about?

This task will not be easy and will require your devoted time and resources to be effective.

"Active learning" is so much more time intensive and requires a methodology that is full of practice, observation and then even more practice.

If you find yourself sitting in the audience, looking at a screen and trying to listen, it could be so different and so much more rewarding.

You could be out there learning new life skills, that you will then quickly apply in the City, the County or the Country of your choice.

To make a real difference and with a true purpose.

On the way there, thank your instructor... Onward!

Maps: Finding Your Next Destination...

Where you decide to live your life and the geography that surrounds you, will shape who you become in your future.

When you were growing up, did you ever ask your Mom or Dad, why are we living here?

Did you ever have the pure curiosity to look on a map to discover where in your country your hometown was actually located? How far was it to your Nations Capital?

Your story as a young human being and where you started your early years going to a local school and taking a geography class was just your beginning.

What about the neighborhood you lived in and the friends and places around you that shaped many of your thoughts on life forever. That single map you were curious examining, was just a small world view of our entire globe and your opportunity.

In 2022, you now have the satellite imagery resolution and cloud-based services such as ESRI, Maxar or even just Google Maps to quickly explore your next destination.

Explore your next city, state and geography to live or work.

Your parents probably did not have those high tech tools when you were growing up across from the big lake, in just a small Mid-West community in our United States.

Now, how might you utilize a myriad of new technologies and online tools to research your next destination in life?

What questions might you ask yourself to begin to zero-in on a particular Zip Code or a proximity to the ocean, the mountains or the city with tall skyscrapers?

Would you begin with the weather site? Would you begin with ZipRecruiter dot com? Would you begin with Rent dot com? Would you begin with CrimeMapping dot com?

Yes, and unfortunately these days, people must consider all kinds of “Operational Risks” in their own particular community. Why?

We have all heard or experienced first hand the news reports from city names of where significant “Loss Events” have occurred across our America.

The spectrum of risks are wide and so unpredictable. Here are just four such examples:

Where will you find your next place to work and/or raise a family, so that you may truly prosper and your family will be more safe and secure?

Where are the schools you will choose to associate with, that start the day with our “Pledge of Allegiance”? Where you will find “School Protective Resource Officers” are on premise and kindly greeting students as they arrive each day.

Why will you volunteer with your local Citizens Corps Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and/or join your metro area InfraGard Members Alliance (IMA)?

Why will you learn CPR and how to use a tourniquet, organize a search and rescue team, learn self-defense and how to more effectively Understand, Decide and Act, with real-time digital active streams of relevant threat information?

Because of the geography where you grew up and it all began. Because of where you went to College and earned your degree(s). Because you learned and worked more than most in our International world of asymmetric warfare with continuous and invisible Operational Risks.

Because of your growing Christian faith. Because you have been Married once for 35+ years. Because together you and your wife raised a daughter and a son who were only 19 months apart working full-time.

Because your kids both graduated with Bachelor degrees from State Universities. Because they are now building successful careers within a Dow Jones Industrial Fortune 500 and a US Federal Government Agency.

Because you have your first Grandson. :-)

Because your own Mother and Father made the right decisions, on where to live and raise your family, as just another young kid on the YMCA Swim Team in that little Mid-West town.

In our wonderful and only, United States of America…USA!

Innovation: The Speed of Exploration...

Why does your organization encounter Operational Risk events that have caught you off balance, off guard or created substantial losses to shareholders and major stakeholders?

There are people in your organization right now that are still without the tools, the training or the methodology to solve new significant problem-sets.

More vital, is that your organization is not proactively generating new innovative ideas, new solutions and new answers to your own operational risk issues.

innovation - noun
in· no· va· tion | \ ˌi-nə-ˈvā-shən
Definition of innovation
1: a new idea, method, or device : novelty
2: the introduction of something new

To truly innovate a new product/solution, you must first do your research. Your field study. You must get out of the building and ride in the field.

Show up on the front lines of your business unannounced. This is nothing new, yet it works and it is amazing on what you will learn.

You have the awareness of why this method of discovery is the basis for better understanding the problem-set(s).

So why as the leader in your small business or Fortune 500 Global enterprise do you ignore or delegate the true innovation mechanisms in your company to just a few people.

Why have you loss sight of the mandatory Recruiting, Education, Networking and Sharing metrics by your front line teams?

Discovering, researching, prototyping, practicing, refining your methodology to more rapidly respond to threats, to your competition, to possible opportunities.

You see, you and your organization have become complacent. You have not changed your onboarding experience of new employees or new customers in over a decade.

Why is it true, that most people and organizations don’t focus on innovation and new solutions to a problem, until there is a significant loss event.

An incident that hits the local headlines. A risk event so damaging to the bottom line it could mean closing the business forever.

How might you design the methodology and the system in your enterprise to have continuous problem and threat monitoring, new innovation?

It begins with the right people working on the initial prototype together with the correct tools. It means getting senior management on board with facilitating the process to insure the prototypes are tested in the field or Area of Responsibility (AOR).

Next, those individuals who are in charge, in command, at the field level must have the resources and the authority to test, to learn and to gather new data continuously.

Your organization is slowly decaying right before your eyes. Your adversaries are winning.

It has lost its initial purpose because you have not been continuously innovating on the front lines. In the geography and in the organizations of your own neighborhood.

The next time someone in your organization sends you or presents to you a Powerpoint funding proposal with more than 5 pages, with more than 4 bullets on each page without any true graphical data, you know you have to engage.

Filling in the standard forms in your CRM or your word.docx template on a monthly basis might be OK, if it calls for truth and relevant data from the front lines, yet is it focused on the real problem-sets?

How might you and your team change the way you are working on the front lines of your organization? Soon.

Why will you engage differently, before it is too late. What is the Speed of your Exploration?

4 July 2022: "Indivisible with Liberty and Justice for all"...

When was the last time you recited these Patriotic words? In the United States we have our “Pledge of Allegiance”.

You may remember when you first learned these verses in America. As a young student in elementary school or even on the ball field with your team starting a game.

Maybe it was a ceremony when you were in scouting or actually became a U.S. naturalized citizen.

Were you with a small group of like minded volunteers, beginning a meeting or training session to improve your skills and gain new knowledge?  Destined to really make a difference somewhere and somehow in your particular area of responsibility (AOR).

What about you? When you say this pledge does it make your heart beat just a little faster?

Do you notice a small tear in your eye, as you see our magnificent flag of the United States?

As you gaze at 50 stars and 13 stripes of Red, White, and Blue in the wind, you know why.

The innovation journey you are on this next dawn of summer 2022 is about “Doing”. It will encompass your greatest gifts and certainly challenge your mental and physical weaknesses as a human.

If you have been thinking lately, how you will receive something, or get handed a gift or wondering who will tell you what to do next, this message is not for you.

How might you discover a single “Prescient Challenge” or hurdle, that your direct leadership is anticipating in your community or organization? How will you research all of the facets of this problem-set they perceive to be worth solving?

It begins with you “Doing” what so many others in your neighborhood, your community or your organization are not accomplishing on a regular schedule.

Asking the curious questions, with the correct people, who have direct knowledge or experience with your particular problem-set.

There have been many best selling books about “Givers” and “Takers” and even the quiz to determine which kind of person you are in life. Yet this is all about who you are in your own heart.

"Doing the right activities with the correct people to solve the problem without some tangible reward, is a true first step in your long journey ahead."

Before you learned the insight and the skills to become a “Doer” in your life, you were constantly worried about survival. What others were going to provide you?

Now that you have learned the new skills and knowledge to Map & Target, Sketch a Solution, Decide & Prototype, you are well on your way to new foresights of real innovation.

You see, your future as a leader in life begins with being a Volunteer. Donating your valuable time and the intellectual or physical initiative to make a difference on worthwhile solutions.

These are the "Solutions" that solves the real risk problem, essential at the moment, in order to flourish and in many cases to actually survive.

Your own “Resilience” as a person, a neighborhood, an organization in your community is the true outcome. Who will you become…

Banks: Balance Security and Customer Convenience...

Flashback to June 2004.  Always remember.

Banks Balance Security and Customer Convenience: Institutions need strategies to maintain integrity and reliability without compromising experience. by Jason Compton

"Deloitte & Touche LLP has released the results of its 2004 Global Security Survey of the financial services industry, revealing that the number of outside infiltrations of banking systems has more than doubled over a one-year period.

Although banks believe they have policies and procedures in place to manage those threats, they will increasingly be squeezed to maintain an open, accessible relationship with customers, while preserving necessary security.

Deloitte surveyed 64 of the world's largest banks, financial institutions, and insurers, 81 percent of which have annual revenues in excess of $1 billion. A total of 83 percent admitted a security compromise, 40 percent of which resulted in measurable financial damage.

Firms in the EMEA region--about half the respondent pool--were given the highest marks for their overall security readiness. U.S. institutions outspent their global peers, but lagged in clear documentation and delineation of security tasks, and showed a net loss in security positions over a one-year period."

18 years later, what have we learned?

Quiz Question:  What is more secure, sending a six digit Two-Factor authentication code to a customer by 1) SMS or by 2) E-mail.

Why?

Memorial Day: A Prosperous Journey…

On this Memorial Day 2022 in the United States, we mourn all those brave and patriotic American men and women who have served our country and are now on watch in heaven.

Raising our Red, White and Blue American flag today brings tears to our eyes. It reminds us of all that have raised their hand to volunteer and all those who we have lost, to insure our flag is a beacon to the rest of the world.

If you have ever attended a funeral in Arlington National Cemetery...you know what feeling comes over you.

Standing there, when you read the birth dates in Section 60 and you realize how young they were and all those before them.

Defending our own country and all those others who are unable to defend themselves, from perpetual evil forces.

You see, only people who have served and perhaps even their own close family members, truly understand.

Standing there, on a glorious sunny afternoon in Virginia, watching a tearful Mother as she is handed the U.S. Flag carefully folded into a triangle, is an image one shall never forget.

You see, until you have been there, how could you understand what our Memorial Day is truly about.

The Dedication. The Service. The Sweat and Tears. The Courage. The Pride. The Ultimate Sacrifice.

Godspeed…
Noun: a prosperous journey

Rapport: Risk of Relationships...

As you travel the world on business or around your particular county neighborhood, do you ever experience true “Rapport”?

You know it when you hear it, see it or you feel it.

When you encounter an employee working at the desk of your favorite airline, at your grocery store and your local banking branch, do you ever experience true rapport?

rapport
Noun rap· port | \ ra-ˈpȯr
Definition of rapport
: a friendly, harmonious relationship
especially : a relationship characterized by agreement, mutual understanding, or empathy that makes communication possible or easy

Is it the persons own words, their actions or their behavior that this particular person caught your attention?  One might find themselves wanting to revisit this establishment, business or professional service instead of one of the competition.

Brand loyalty or repeat business or the ability to get one customer or client to tell someone else about that customer encounter is what rapport is really all about.

It is all about building long lasting relationships. It is about using true rapport.

How excellent are you as a Senior Leader in your organization at using rapport with employees or new potential clients?

You may have heard some of the classic lines utilized in the past, depending on the business. If you heard: “What brings you in here today?” You might think you just walked into a Ford dealer.

If you heard: “Did you find everything you were looking for”? You might think you were in the aisle at a Gelson’s market.

If you heard: "How might we exceed your expectations today"? You might think you were working with someone who really cares about your needs, your individual requirements.

The entire brand experience with you and your organization from the first phone call, the first web site visit or E-mail inquiry or the first in-person meeting is at stake.

Building rapport shall begin on the first encounter with another person and it shall continue throughout the entire lifecycle of the relationship.

How might you start any initial meeting with another person to give them that feeling of rapport on your 2nd visit, a 3rd encounter, or every encounter by phone, e-mail or in person going forward?

The shareholder, stakeholders or owners of your organization are counting on your Senior Leaders in the business enterprise, to build the brand and grow the numbers.

The 20% at the top of your organization are most likely to be excellent at the Art and Science of rapport. Leadership really is about making everyone else better.

Remember, "Operational Risks" in your business or organization includes People, Processes, Systems and External events.

What are you doing to utilize the 20% of your people to reduce risk in your business, as your next generation of "Senior Leaders" model the true power of Rapport

Metadata: What, Who, Correlate...

As you scrolled through your digital feed today on your favorite Social Media App, what did your finger stop and pause upon?

Was it a particular person you were connected with, who was posting a question Poll?  Why this person?

Was it a specific topic of political interest with a headline that caught your attention? Why this topic?

Was it a picture of your favorite place in the city you live in?  Why this picture?

Maybe it was a combination of all, so you then took the time to do some more research, some background, to try to satisfy a curious state of mind that took over your thinking.

What questions did you seek answers to, in your journey to satisfy your own curiosity?

You are exactly the kind of person the state or private entity is watching and measuring.

Cookies and metadata are their tools:

Metadata means "data about data". Although the "meta" prefix means "after" or "beyond", it is used to mean "about" in epistemology. Metadata is defined as the data providing information about one or more aspects of the data; it is used to summarize basic information about data that can make tracking and working with specific data easier.

So what?

The person on this web page or in this rental vehicle, or this retail store has this “name associated” with the user name or mobile device they have carried within 5 feet of the digital sensor:  John Doe’s iPhone 11.

Whether he is on the browser visiting the web page or has the small radio frequency (RF) device in his pocket, it is being measured.  It is being correlated.  It is being shared.

You see, John/Jane Q. Public for the most part does not care.  He does not think about it.  She is unaware of the implications of the ip, location or metadata they are sharing in their own home, in public locations, or the workplace.

With whom?  The answer to this question depends…
