Independence Day 2025: Service Wisdom...

Who among mortal men are you, good friend? Since never before have I seen you in the fighting where men win glory, yet now you have come striding far out in front of all others in your great heart… —Homer, The Iliad

It was December 21, 2009 boarding a Delta flight with a newly published book in hand on a 10 day Christmas vacation in another country.

“Where Men Win Glory” The Odyssey of Pat Tillman by Jon Krakauer is a tragic story worth remembering as we contemplate our country the USA and all those brave men and women who have defended our freedom and our way of life.

As we approach our next July 4th weekend, this book caught my eye on the shelf as the thoughts of celebrating our United States of America birthday in 2025 came to mind.

Before you were wise, you as an American can’t truly know or understand it all, until you leave it. Until you travel far away across our globe to other countries and cities to see and feel the differences.

Most recently traveling on a Boeing 787 for 14 hours then another 7 hours to another place near the equator, this first gives you the real context of how enormous our Earth really is.

Secondly, spending weeks time in other countries that are foreign to you, provides you the vivid context on our United States in so many ways.

You learn why America included specific language in its “Constitution” as a new country and you can better understand what influence the United States has had on other parts of the world since it’s 1st birthday.

In early June 2002, Pat Tillman and his brother Kevin appeared at the Military Processing Station in downtown Phoenix, AZ. Later in the day, they signed away their freedom and recited the oath of enlistment, and received their orders to appear at Fort Benning Georgia on July, 8 2002.

Two years later Pat Tillman died on a desolate hillside in southeastern Afghanistan after leaving behind a $3.6 million NFL contract to enlist in the United States Army.

How will you work in your own years ahead in America or OCONUS, to defend our freedoms and to help defeat evil across our small towns, our cities and vast metropolitan areas?

This 4th of July Independence Day weekend, think about how you will contribute to our great nation.

Maybe it begins by leaving it for a week or two, just to reveal what you will miss.

What you will feel. What you will better understand about the “How and “Why” we were founded as the United States of America.

"We as a nation have so much to learn from others across the world, and yet if you never travel outside your state or even your own country, how will you ever say you truly understand."

When you feel the same calling as Pat Tillman and his brother did about serving your country, figure out how you too will contribute.

How might you make a difference in fighting evil and making our country even better?

Get out there! How will you serve…

Vigilance is The Name of The Game...

President George W. Bush logged a victory in 2006 when the U.S. House of Representatives renewed the USA Patriot Act, a law that gave the FBI expanded powers to investigate terrorism after the Sept. 11 attacks.

When was the last time as a CxO in your organization that you reviewed the law? Here are a few of the renewed provisions:

>Section 201 Gives federal officials the authority to intercept wire, spoken and electronic communications relating to terrorism.

>Section 202 Gives federal officials the authority to intercept wire, spoken and electronic communications relating to computer fraud and abuse offenses.

>Subsection 203(b) Permits the sharing of grand jury information that involves foreign intelligence or counterintelligence with federal law enforcement, intelligence, protective, immigration, national defense or national security officials

>Subsection 203(d) Gives foreign intelligence or counterintelligence officers the ability to share foreign intelligence information obtained as part of a criminal investigation with law enforcement.

>Section 204 Makes clear that nothing in the law regarding pen registers an electronic device that records all numbers dialed from a particular phone line stops the government's ability to obtain foreign intelligence information.

>Section 209 Permits the seizure of voicemail messages under a warrant.

>Section 212 Permits Internet service providers and other electronic communication and remote computing service providers to hand over records and e-mails to federal officials in emergency situations.

"Whether you are a government or a small business you must have a layered and defense in depth approach to the safety and security of your enterprise. You have to monitor insiders, gather intelligence and keep an eye on foreign competitors."

Key people in your organization are key targets for a spectrum of threats both physical, economic and digital. When is the last time you saw a CEO, CFO, CRO or Board Member walk down to the INFOSEC department and ask the team if they had all the tools and resources they need to do their jobs effectively.

And if they did raise their hand and say they could use some help with solutions to help combat all insider threats including intellectual property leakage, vendor collusion, financial fraud, and customer data loss. You might recommend they look at the FedRamp Marketplace.

The leaders of a medium-size community bank, Fortune 500 enterprise, Private Sector Critical Infrastructure company and local city government still have the same thing in common today as with George W. Bush 18 plus years ago…

Resilient Future: Curious Observation...

On this vibrant and chilly Fall day, facing West towards the mountains, as the sun rises behind us a few bright star-like lights shine for just a few minutes.

These reflections are from the bright morning sun shining off home windows near Evergreen Meadows some 40 miles away, yet just perfectly in our vision, starts our day ahead.

The tree leaves are actively changing colors and signals to us to now begin to prepare for the changing environment ahead.

In other work or government assignments, perhaps you and your project team have been measuring your environment. Have you been checking your “Threat Management App” this moment for the detection of more serious anomalies this minute.

Being actively observant in nature and your own organizational environment could be the real difference between loss or growth. In your life, you must “Always Be Ready”.

Your ability to continuously increase your resilience to changing temperatures in nature and also the change in temperament of your organizations beneficiaries, will make a significant difference.

As you think about your role, your position and the current project you are now assigned to, the question remains: Who are you serving?

There is change in the wind and you must prepare now, you shall be proactive in your thinking over the horizon, so that you also can anticipate the future outcomes.

How might you spend more time in curious dialogue with your respective beneficiaries to better understand their point of view, their particular requirements and their current temperament?

The problem-set before you requires valuable time, brain power and resources to determine the validity of your current hypothesis.

In the path forward, most researchers, analysts and scientists would probably say that if you have not changed your hypothesis, then you have not used enough data or time to ascertain the true reality of the problem at this point in time.

How might you analyze more data from various sources faster with little error so that you arrive at a valid “Trust Decision”?

Being proactive is not being forceful. Being proactive is being curious. It is a mission of discovery and building wisdom.

Your future actions are a factor of your problem-set and the ability to accurately solve it with a solution defined by your curious observation.

There is change in the wind before us and we must “Always Be Ready”…

RENS: Growing Your Enterprise...

There he was, in the early morning light, prancing along outside the fence line just seventy-five feet away.

The young “Buck Deer” with his adolescent antlers stopped and glanced over at the house, just to acknowledge that he saw us sitting on the deck.

As Fall arrives and kids are back in school, it seems as if the pace of work and the demands on peoples time starts to take its toll. Be aware.

Years ago, as some wise people developed the systems and programs around the acronym RENS, they knew from years of experience on the front lines of true battle why it was so vital to success:

  • Recruiting
  • Education
  • Networking
  • Sharing Information

This is the high level context for what your daily activities shall be focused on each day, of each week of each month this year.

"How might you design your program, your systems, your time allocations towards these four key components of your enterprise?"

The original designers knew that each organization is unique and therefore, provided an acronym to keep you on track. Easy to remember, harder to implement effectively on a consistent basis.

If you advertise as one example, for a particular event and you ask people to RSVP, how do you respond after they fill out your form, full of personal contact details?

If they actually attend the event and take the time to see and hear all about your X or Y, how do you respond after they leave and think about what they heard and experienced at your event?

Do you follow-up or do nothing?

At a recent weekly event the guest speaker and very wise man broke down the Recruiting part of RENS to further to three simple steps:

  • Belong
  • Believe
  • Behave

First, if you haven’t created an event where people immediately feel like they belong there, that you too believe in many of the same things they do, you will have a rough time ever getting to the last “B”.

How might you get other people to behave in a certain way?

The tough part about RENS is, that if you are not executing 100% on the effectiveness of your “Recruiting”, how will you ever get the opportunity to Educate, Network and then Share truly vital Information?

Perhaps even more difficult, how will you ever get good people to join your "Just Cause"?

As the “Young Buck” glanced back at us one more time as he went around the tall Spruce tree, we smiled and waved…

Enterprise Security Risk Management (ESRM): Be Proactive…

What are three major questions that most CxO executives and Boards of Directors need to answer when confronting information security issues:

  1. Is your security policy enforced fairly, consistently and legally across the enterprise.
  2. Would our employees, contractors and partners know if a security violation was being committed?
  3. Would they know what to do about it if they did recognize a security violation?

In today’s complex 5G wireless world, global supply chains, nation states or insider threats to the information infrastructure of a company or government agency are not static, one time events.

With new exploits, vulnerabilities, and digital attack tools widely available for download or X-as-a-Service (XaaS), a “complete information security solution” in place today can easily become outdated and incomplete tomorrow.

As a result, a comprehensive security architecture solution must be flexible and dynamic, continuously monitored and updated.

Presently, the news of “Zero-Day” digital-threat events tends to spread through the computer security world in a “grapevine” manner.

Threat information is obtained from specialized websites, e-mail listservs, cyber managed services and countless other informal sources.

This haphazard system is incomplete and therefore raises enterprise security risk management concerns when evaluating the damaging, costly effects of an aggressive, systematic digital event.

A comprehensive security solution requires the careful integration of people, processes, systems and external events that allows correlation and implementation of a “layered” defense coupled with a firm application of risk-management principles.

To fully protect electronic information architectures, an organization needs current intelligence and analysis that allows constant adjustment and fine-tuning of security measures (e.g., firewalls, intrusion-detection systems, virus protection) to effectively defend against a rapidly changing landscape.

Threats and vulnerabilities relating to computer networks, websites and information assets must be addressed before an attack occurs.

Proactive Awareness and the ability to make informed decisions are critical.

So what?

In short, as our global electronic economy plays an increasing role in the private and public sectors, critical infrastructure organizations must take advantage of the resulting new opportunities for growth and gains in efficiency and productivity.

Realizing these gains, depends on an organization’s ability to open its information architecture to customers, partners and, in some cases, even competitors.

This heightened exposure creates greater risk and makes an organization a more likely target for attack (e.g., information and monetary theft, business ransomware disruption).

The cost of critical infrastructure failure climbs exponentially in relation to increasing reliance on our integrated systems with partners, subsidiaries and your vital supply chain.

Be proactive…

CERT: Make a Difference in this World...

Since the beginning of time, weather has been unpredictable. So has man.

When was the last time you witnessed the aftermath of a natural disaster?

When was the last time you saw the devastation from the Fateh-110 family of short-range ballistic weapons?

The continuous examples of risks to our world could generally be put into two major categories, 1) those we as humans can control and 2) those natural risks that we can’t control and shall have to live with.

Our spectrum of "Operational Risks" across People, Processes, Systems and External Events is vast and endless.

Where do you as a leader in your organization spend most or your time and resources to try and mitigate risks:

  • Natural Disasters and Weather (External Events)
  • People and Processes

Why?

Do you think that you are able to make a difference with those risks that you might be able to control?

Which is it - A) controlling the weather or B) influencing human behavior. Pick one.

What might happen if we devoted more time and resources to “B”.

How might this investment have a risk reduction impact and reduction in annual loss events to your family, organization, community, college or government?

Complacency or ignorance will continue to plague us and will make the world a more dangerous place to work and live.

Just listen to your own local news for a day. What will you learn?

Now, learn what you might do to make proactive difference.

This is one great place to begin: Community Emergency Response Team CERT.

Similar to the Community concept, why not apply this just cause of continuous training and learning to a Corporation, a Church, a Synagogue, a Campus, a Club or a Cinema.

“The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.” Albert Einstein

Secure: Find it...

What are you and your team doing this week to create a “Secure” environment?

Your organization is counting on you for all that defines this adjective:

Secure

adjective

se· cure si-ˈkyu̇r  -ˈkyər

securer; securest

1a: free from danger

b: affording safety

c: TRUSTWORTHY, DEPENDABLE

a secure foundation

d: free from risk of loss

2a: easy in mind : CONFIDENT

b: assured in opinion or expectation : having no doubt

How are you creating and maintaining a continuously “Secure” workplace, church, school, home, transportation system, main street or entire country environment?

It’s not the role or responsibility of One person. One department. One agency. One camera.

"Leadership as a CEO, Principal, Parent, Mayor or President requires you to continuously pursue a more “Secure” environment that requires focus and a persistent innovation mindset."

Your family, your employees, your town and your own nation are watching you.

You may think you understand the problem-set. You might try to use one tool. You will learn that you must continuously adapt. Build prototypes. Test again.

Your creative ability to change on the fly, your capability to act faster than the threat will make all the difference in your counter-response.

What are you measuring this day, week or month to determine what and where you need to adapt?

It is not always what you will be able to hear, smell or see with the naked eye. This is why innovators designed detectors, radar, alarms, cameras and even binoculars.

Asymmetric threats to our environments are Invisible. Undetectable. Irregular. Disordered. Atypical.

So what?

All of us, into eternity will remain responsible for our “Secure” environment.

Whether it may be in your global neighborhood, on campus, at the Mall, in your software, undersea, aerial or to Mars, you too shall have a role.

Find it…

Operational Risk: A Continuous Journey...

Back then, it was a quick and easy way for you to become your own publisher on the WWW, of what ever you wanted to write, show or discuss with others that maybe you had never known before.

It was the beginning of Fall of 2003 and a new Internet product set was gaining traction on the World Wide Web.

In those days, Google named it “Blogger” and to this day, you also may still create your own Blog.

It was a moment when you realize that maybe others might enjoy reading what you had to say about specific topics. Maybe not.

So this journey began with a focus on all things in the arena of “Operational Risk” and trying to manage those risks in your life that were not directly under the financial category. A vast jigsaw puzzle of continuous testing and verification.

The “Big Four” accounting firms and the largest Management Consulting firms such as McKinsey & Company were the leaders here on a global stage.

If you too have been one of those people that has a bunch of composition books in a box in your closet and are your journals of the day, you might have a sense of what the “Blogger” trend was all about in the early 2000s.

So this transition from just journaling to blogging at operationalrisk.blogspot.com was born 20+ years ago this September to capture the thoughts, ideas and comments on:

“Operational Risk is defined as the risk of loss resulting from inadequate or failed processes, people, and systems or from external events. The definition includes legal risk, which is the risk of loss resulting from failure to comply with laws as well as prudent ethical standards and contractual obligations. It also includes exposure to litigation from all aspects of an institutions activities.”

The composition books for writing the periodic thoughts, ideas, news and other global events from this writers perspective, was now headed online and there for all of us to read.

There was no longer a need for all those composition journaling books taking up space in a closet or the garage attic, in that little brick house near Reston in Northern Virginia.

So what?

Once you exceed the 1000+ entries over a span of a 20 year period, it gives you insightful context on your chosen subject area: Operational Risk Management.

Operational Risk in your business environment, in your own life is always going to be present. The question is, will you acknowledge it and do your best to try and manage it?

So whether you ever become a digital online “Blogger,” or you just continue to keep putting all of those hand written journals in a box under your desk does not really matter.

Who cares?

Until your particular learning, your continuous discovery, innovation, expression and your mindful thought could actually be a purpose you alone enjoy.

Whether you are writing about your latest recipes in the kitchen, or your side-gig business as a women’s clothing "Fashion Stylist" or documenting family adventures on vacation or even on the subjects of other human interests on space exploration, our Earth ecosystem and even future trips to Mars some day.

Your words and your story of passion on the topic or knowledge is the key. A persistent pursuit of being more knowledgeable and reliable. The person or subject matter expert that you want to continuously become into the future.

Perhaps most importantly, your words and facts may have helped someone else along their path. Someone learned something new. Someone you will never know, reduced their own "Operational Risks" or their company or their employees or even their own families.

So in closing this blog article today, just remember a few key items:

  1. Update your digital device in your hand to that latest iOS X.X version. Ha Ha.
  2. And while you are at it, train some more people at your school, office or work on “Insider Threat”, “Run, Hide, Fight”, “Business Continuity Management”, “Disaster Recovery”, or the emerging pandemic of digital “Ransomware”.

Learn how to use those life saving tools like the AED and the Tourniquet in that White box hanging on the wall in the hallway…and Never Forget!

Asymmetric: Deer in the Headlights...

It was June of 2021 when the iPhone buzzed and the CxO requested a briefing on this growing threat on the horizon. Ransomware had already been gaining traction for years.

Human behavior has been repeating itself since the beginning and once again, this "Corporate Executive" was no different.

“We need a briefing on what we need to do at “Our Company” to avoid being attacked by this ransomware hacker!”

The response was immediate. “The Executive Report is ready for you now and the Executive Team whenever you all are together in the Board Room, yet when will you have just 30 minutes for our local Information Security Team to brief you today?”

Have you ever encountered a boss who had that “Deer In The Headlights” look on their face when they were asking for your assistance?

Did you see the “CBS Evening News” last evening they yell!

“CLOp, the ransomware gang responsible for exploiting a critical security vulnerability in a popular corporate file transfer tool, has begun listing victims of the mass-hacks, including a number of U.S. banks and universities.”

For those of us who have been operating in this business for a few decades, the behavior of uninformed corporate citizens to the continuous threat vectors in our world is never going to cease.

As Digital First Responders we then communicate with a few key messages to executive management in the “C” Suite, yet not all at once!

As you will learn, you have to communicate a measured yet continuously deliberate set of message facts over the course of a week or two, for people to slowly comprehend the vast landscape of the business problem they are now in:

  • Critical infrastructures are those systems and assets- whether Physical or Virtual – that are considered so vital to the United States that their incapacitation or destruction would have a debilitating effect on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination of those matters.
  • As Ransomware Attacks continue to grow, organizations need to improve their security posture to protect against an attack. Better security requires implementing appropriate security controls and ensuring that effective crisis management and employee education are in place.
  • The landscape of how we work has changed. We must assess vulnerabilities in a new way and with increased due diligence
  • The cost of a cyber attack is often significant for organizations large and small, and we must strengthen responsiveness and reduce behaviors that may open vulnerabilities in the future.
  • Public Private Partnerships of Critical Infrastructure organizations
with CISA.gov and FBI.gov are vital to enhance our U.S. National Security.

Once you have effectively provided these top 5 bullets to your executives, then the real work shall begin:

THE RANSOMWARE CRISIS

The current ransomware crisis can be attributed to the following factors:

  1. History of Inaction
  2. New Tactics
  3. Rapid Technology Deployment / Innovation without Security & Resilience
  4. Safe Harbors for Criminals

Since you are a “Digital First Responder”, try to remember your audience is still learning the vast and pervasive implications, of what many of us have been fighting since the dawn of the Internet and our growing Asymmetric Warfare”

OPS Risk: 7 Revolutions on our Horizon…

The holiday season is almost upon us. One only has to look into the mirror of 2022 to see the trajectory of our world.

Our digital globe is preparing itself for the next major breakpoint in its history of commerce and business.

Our organizations are in anarchy and the consumers of our products and services are shifting before our eyes.

You only have to look back on the past years major headlines of the Washington Post to gain some perspective on where we are headed in the next 12 months.

Social consciousness is seeping into the workplace and management is keenly aware of the accelerating change factors on the corporate doorstep for 2023-24.

Several new waves of incremental change are upon us. As providers of products and services to the consumers of the planet, whether businesses or individuals, the writing is on the walls of the corporate boardroom: Survive.

The tides of change are now upon us. Look no further than the Seven Revolutions Initiative. [See 7 Revs] The social, technological and demographic facets are enough to make anyone wonder where we are all headed in the next 20 years.

Our Critical Infrastructure industries are putting the building blocks in place to sustain a dramatic shift in who their customers are today and whom they will be tomorrow.

2023 will be another year of corporate malfeasance, seeded with wondrous accounts of incivility. Spawned by the empowered employee to become a whistle blower and a bold new generation of inside crime fighters.

Our generations of young workers and consumers on this planet will pay for something they can believe in, rather than something that is socially and morally bankrupt.

They will work all day in the global banking software development department and work late into the night, developing the next binary code to impress their peers on the other side of the world developing the latest ransomware on the Internet.

They will design the new marketing campaign for the next gas guzzling 4-wheel drive SUV by day and ride home that same evening in their brand new foreign hybrid using electric power.

2023 will be a year of heightened sensitivity to security and exponential asymmetric warfare.

Our dated processes and systems will be adjusted and tweaked to accommodate the planets morphing threats by a new force of true “Innovation Navigators.”

The Board Room Buzz will be more about how to protect those vital corporate assets and simultaneously how to survive our next crisis.

What may be most interesting, is how the governments of the world now cooperate to become more of a global partner on this front.

We sense already a growing cooperation among world leaders to deter and defend our citizens from the spread of a tyrants fear and uncertainty.

Finally, 2023 will be another year we find greater appreciation for:

  • The evening glimmer of sunlight across a body of clean water. The wave from the neighbor who lives next door or across the street.
  • Our faith in what or whomever we believe in. Those who serve, so we can remain free of threats or illness, to our loved ones and our own well-being.
  • The signs that our bodies are healthy. The hope that exists in all of us, for finding a greater peace of mind.

In 2023 and beyond, look with fresh eyes on everyday things…

Complacency: Zeros & Ones of Safety...

How might you increase your own resilience to known potential risks in your business operations or even personally this week, or this month?

We all know that growing up, Mom and Dad would teach us, “Don’t talk to strangers”. “Don’t play with matches”. “Wear your seat belt”. Why?

Even a U.S. President is famous for his quote: “Trust But Verify”.

Our life long history of financial transactions and your own personal biometric identity, has made its way online and into the Zeros and Ones digital realms of the U.S. government, Google, Amazon, Apple, Nordstroms and even Netflix.

The single phone number and the e-mail address you have retained for a decade or more, tells almost your entire life story. Where, What, When. How.

In the years past, as you were experiencing all the new mobile technologies and digital services available to you, remember that so too, are the “Nation States” and the “International Criminal Syndicates.

You, the “Human Being” operator, are the single greatest risk to your business and your family safety.

Is it possible that your own personality traits are being exploited by commercial enterprises? Yes.

Is it conceivable that every time you provide a phone number at your retail check out stand to gain rewards, that this contributes to your profiling by Artificial Intelligence (Ai) algorithms with Data Brokers? Yes.

Your business organizations safety and your own families potential vulnerabilities to a spectrum of Operational Risks, are continuously at stake.

When will you make a commitment to change your behavior and to build a discipline that endures and increases your resilience at work and at home?

So what?

If you as a Mother or Father, or Brother or Sister have ever said, “You can’t have a phone until you are 13,” then you have a personal and vital life opportunity before you.

If our own society that is visible in our own cities and geography, has evidence of rising risk and lower levels of personal safety, you might think of our vast searchable World Wide Web as just the top of the “Iceberg”.

However, 90% as you may know, is below the surface and not visible, also known as the “Dark Web”.

"Yet most average users of corporate business networks have little insight into the growing losses from ransomware. A review of 2021 8-K filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reveals a more complete picture of the financial damage from ransomware." CSO Online by Cynthia Brumfield

It all begins with a click in an e-mail or text message, from those behind the curtain, or below the surface, utilizing their “Social Engineering” processes across millions of users profiles, purchased somewhere on the Dark Web.

Personal Profiles built and donated as a result of your own activities and actions. Why do you think that the “Digital Forensics” industry is booming?

So what is the solution? How can the growing threat ever be minimized?

It begins here. Less complacent attitudes and behavior in the Board Room and the Family Room is our only hope. It is our only proactive solution towards true resilience.

Just Remember. Don’t play with matches or digital unknowns. Teach someone else the same...

Op_Pros: Achieving Singularity...

Our future depends on our ability to create new designs, new prototypes and then quickly deliver these to the end users on the front lines.

Author Peter Thiel in his book “Zero to One” articulates the challenge of our future. His insights are the modern day relevancy we all desperately need.

Stagnation or Singularity. What will be your destiny?

Economic competition and our future trends towards massive global disruptions requires our most vital organizations to find singular ways to improve and to discover “New”.

Our most coveted purpose has always brought us a daily motivation to excel. To think. To create. To test. To learn. To repeat.

A high risk mission that shall bring us so much closer to seeking out the real tasks that are critical to our collective future.

What emerging skills will be continuously required by humans to develop and test our new designs, prototypes and inventions?

How might we develop new tools and system methods to assist us along the challenging journey?

"Your particular group of “Operational Professionals” await the next challenges, new found problem-sets and purposeful tasks towards building our resilient futures."

Your specialized team shall assemble according to subject-matter-expertise that is focused on solving the true problem-set, integrated with specific geography experience where the prototype will be tested.

Over-The-Horizon (OTH) innovation within the walls of the historical institution of origin rarely is successful.

Our story truly begins when your “Operational Professionals” engage together beyond the organizational walls, away from the traditional rule-sets and together using the innovative new methods, real-time strategy and tactics to now move from “Zero to One”.

Your mission success will continuously rely upon the magnitude of your integrated skill-sets and relevant accuracy of the real-time information discovery.

The outcomes from obtaining your objectives and solving the problems identified will accelerate your abilities to find “New”.  To learn together as a unified team. To start the LOOP all over again with new insights and the metrics for future success.

What important truth, do “Very Few” people agree with you on?

Look beyond the near wall and into the far distance to imagine what you will achieve together…

Innovation: The Speed of Exploration...

Why does your organization encounter Operational Risk events that have caught you off balance, off guard or created substantial losses to shareholders and major stakeholders?

There are people in your organization right now that are still without the tools, the training or the methodology to solve new significant problem-sets.

More vital, is that your organization is not proactively generating new innovative ideas, new solutions and new answers to your own operational risk issues.

innovation - noun
in· no· va· tion | \ ˌi-nə-ˈvā-shən
Definition of innovation
1: a new idea, method, or device : novelty
2: the introduction of something new

To truly innovate a new product/solution, you must first do your research. Your field study. You must get out of the building and ride in the field.

Show up on the front lines of your business unannounced. This is nothing new, yet it works and it is amazing on what you will learn.

You have the awareness of why this method of discovery is the basis for better understanding the problem-set(s).

So why as the leader in your small business or Fortune 500 Global enterprise do you ignore or delegate the true innovation mechanisms in your company to just a few people.

Why have you loss sight of the mandatory Recruiting, Education, Networking and Sharing metrics by your front line teams?

Discovering, researching, prototyping, practicing, refining your methodology to more rapidly respond to threats, to your competition, to possible opportunities.

You see, you and your organization have become complacent. You have not changed your onboarding experience of new employees or new customers in over a decade.

Why is it true, that most people and organizations don’t focus on innovation and new solutions to a problem, until there is a significant loss event.

An incident that hits the local headlines. A risk event so damaging to the bottom line it could mean closing the business forever.

How might you design the methodology and the system in your enterprise to have continuous problem and threat monitoring, new innovation?

It begins with the right people working on the initial prototype together with the correct tools. It means getting senior management on board with facilitating the process to insure the prototypes are tested in the field or Area of Responsibility (AOR).

Next, those individuals who are in charge, in command, at the field level must have the resources and the authority to test, to learn and to gather new data continuously.

Your organization is slowly decaying right before your eyes. Your adversaries are winning.

It has lost its initial purpose because you have not been continuously innovating on the front lines. In the geography and in the organizations of your own neighborhood.

The next time someone in your organization sends you or presents to you a Powerpoint funding proposal with more than 5 pages, with more than 4 bullets on each page without any true graphical data, you know you have to engage.

Rapport: Risk of Relationships...

As you travel the world on business or around your particular county neighborhood, do you ever experience true “Rapport”?

You know it when you hear it, see it or you feel it.

When you encounter an employee working at the desk of your favorite airline, at your grocery store and your local banking branch, do you ever experience true rapport?

rapport
Noun rap· port | \ ra-ˈpȯr
Definition of rapport
: a friendly, harmonious relationship
especially : a relationship characterized by agreement, mutual understanding, or empathy that makes communication possible or easy

Is it the persons own words, their actions or their behavior that this particular person caught your attention?  One might find themselves wanting to revisit this establishment, business or professional service instead of one of the competition.

Brand loyalty or repeat business or the ability to get one customer or client to tell someone else about that customer encounter is what rapport is really all about.

It is all about building long lasting relationships. It is about using true rapport.

How excellent are you as a Senior Leader in your organization at using rapport with employees or new potential clients?

You may have heard some of the classic lines utilized in the past, depending on the business. If you heard: “What brings you in here today?” You might think you just walked into a Ford dealer.

If you heard: “Did you find everything you were looking for”? You might think you were in the aisle at a Gelson’s market.

If you heard: "How might we exceed your expectations today"? You might think you were working with someone who really cares about your needs, your individual requirements.

The entire brand experience with you and your organization from the first phone call, the first web site visit or E-mail inquiry or the first in-person meeting is at stake.

Building rapport shall begin on the first encounter with another person and it shall continue throughout the entire lifecycle of the relationship.

How might you start any initial meeting with another person to give them that feeling of rapport on your 2nd visit, a 3rd encounter, or every encounter by phone, e-mail or in person going forward?

The shareholder, stakeholders or owners of your organization are counting on your Senior Leaders in the business enterprise, to build the brand and grow the numbers.

The 20% at the top of your organization are most likely to be excellent at the Art and Science of rapport. Leadership really is about making everyone else better.

Remember, "Operational Risks" in your business or organization includes People, Processes, Systems and External events.

What are you doing to utilize the 20% of your people to reduce risk in your business, as your next generation of "Senior Leaders" model the true power of Rapport

Character: Professional Experience Metrics...

What does having professional experience mean to you? At what point do you go from being someone without experience, to a person that has professional experience?

The category or area of profession has all to do with making the rules and setting the bar higher or lower for people to say they are experienced.

Some work professions simply ask you to take a long examination and achieve a passing score in order to say you have professional experience.

Other professionals realize that no matter how many tests you take, it will never prepare you for all of the challenges you will encounter ahead.

Yes, first you may have to go to some kind of skills building and educational courses to gain the fundamentals. Yet it is the hours and days of time in the actual performance of the work that is measured in many professions:

  • What about a Pilot? How do they measure their experience?
  • What about a Fireman? How do they measure their experience?
  • What about a Surgeon? How do they measure their experience?
  • What about an Investment Advisor? How do they measure their experience?
  • What about an Instructor? How do they measure their experience?
  • What about a Baseball player? How do they measure their experience?

Every category of industry, work professions and individuals placed in charge of the production responsibility, the successful outcomes, and the safety and security of others is especially measured on their levels of professional experience.

How many Hours or how many Incidents or how many Encounters or closed Deals or Games Played?

You see, experience is really about how many hours and other metrics you have practiced and tested your own abilities in the actual work. Good days and bad days. Yet there is so much more.

It is also about the Positive outcomes of the work performed. It is also about the Negative outcomes of the work performed.

Being experienced in a profession means exactly what is widely measured in that particular role or position.

So how do you make a decision on who to select as your next (name a position or role in an organization or group)?

A persons “Character” is also a key factor and measurement on total professional experience. The noun, not the adjective or verb.

CHARACTER noun
: one of the attributes or features that make up and distinguish an individual.
: the complex of mental and ethical traits marking and often individualizing a person, group, or nation.

What is most complex about humans working in so many different professions, is the Experience to Character ratio.

How much Operational Risk will you accept, with the Experience:Character ratio in your organization or team? E100:C100.  E75:C50.  E100:C0?

How will you perform in your professional life? Who will you Trust?

Life Long Learning: 86 Seconds & Beyond...

As history unfolds before our eyes in April of 2022, what is on your mind about your future?

If you knew you only had about “86 seconds” or less, before a nuclear ICBM hit your metropolitan city in the USA, what would you think about? Would you say a prayer?

“WASHINGTON, April 20 (Reuters) - Russia properly notified the United States ahead of its test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, the Pentagon said on Wednesday, adding it saw the test as routine and not a threat to the United States.

Russia said earlier on Wednesday it had conducted a first test launch of its Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, a new addition to its nuclear arsenal which President Vladimir Putin said would give Moscow's enemies something to think about.”

How you act and what you say to others will make a difference in your life. What will your particular ideology be and why?

Definition of ideology

  • 1a : a manner or the content of thinking characteristic of an individual, group, or culture
  • b : the integrated assertions, theories and aims that constitute a sociopolitical program
  • c : a systematic body of concepts especially about human life or culture
  • 2 : visionary theorizing

"How you think and perform, to accomplish relevant and important tasks in your family, your career and your community is always in your control."

  1. Take a step back in your particular time line. Open another tab in your browser and navigate to Google Maps. Look up the address of the house you grew up in.
  2. Go to the imagery view and the photos from Maxar Technologies satellites and the Google photos and then you can actually travel along your old road. Pivot around. See what your old neighborhood looks like these days or in years past.

Remember? When you used to climb that tree in your front yard or ride your big red "Schwinn Typhoon" bicycle down that rough dirt road you lived on for so many years?

This is where your ideology and you're thinking about life began. Where you fell and scraped your knees and you learned to swim in the lakes with your best friends.

“Where and how far have you traveled, since those early days of your life? Who have you been influenced by and where and how did you learn what integrity really means?”

Your particular human history so far in April of 2022 is not the end. There is still so much to see and so much to know in your life, while you still have time.

How will you continue to learn and who will you spend time with in the days and years ahead?

What will you “DO” to make some difference with a stranger or even to just buy food for others you might care about?

You see, each second, each minute and each day is yours to make your own "Trust Decisions."  Who will you become…

Madison Ave to Llewellyne Ave: Digital Warfare on our Doorsteps…

Complex Irregular Warfare, whether "Asymmetric or Hybrid" will be exponential into the next decade and shall consume our Earth and beyond.

John Q. Citizen who is walking down the street in Syria or Europe, Africa, Asia, South America or Kyiv already is more aware of this fact.

“Hybridity ... is characterized by the interpenetration of a wide range of non-state actors including any combination of insurgent or terrorist networks; organized crime groups; social groups such as clans, tribes or ethnic groups; and ideologically or religiously motivated organizations; all of which may be backed covertly or overtly by states and/or legitimate businesses.”
Schroefl and Kaufman,
“Hybrid Actors,” pp. 862, 867.

This is still about our digital modern warfare, not focused or about the next variant of a biological weapon.

Asymmetric and hybrid warfare is not new and it has been operating on Main Street USA for a decade or more, yet most people are apathetic or complacent as they walk down the sidewalk starring at their latest digital communicator.

Who knows more about you as a person? The people on Madison Avenue or on Amphitheatre Parkway. These forces working together to better understand you as a behavioral thinking machine and to Win, are beyond your typical John Q. Citizens comprehension.

Now take this Asymmetric or Hybrid foundation and apply this to our next 24 hours and to the next 12 months. What you read and what you hear and what you see on an LCD screen, is the modern digital battlefield. In the USA. In Ukraine. In China. In North Korea. In Iran. In the UK.

The corporate and business battlefield has now spread across our other 16+ Critical Infrastructures, such as energy pipelines and beyond to hospitals, schools and universities, water and electric utilities, local government municipalities and vital federal government agencies.

The attack surface has now spread to our homes, apartments and where ever you may connect your little LCD screen to the Internet, for your Work From Home (WFH) strategy.

You see, that little black or white or blue communications box sitting there on your desk, credenza or table in the storage room, with little blinking lights is actually part of this digital global battlefield. You as a citizen soldier now need to do your part.

The Router/modem/Cable box sitting inside your own domicile or business, is the entry point for our modern global adversaries. It is your Duty of Care and your mission to defend your Family, your Community and your Country.

You can realize your own vulnerabilities in order to respond. To increase your resiliency. To upgrade or update your own digital hardware and software, in order to Deter, Detect and Defend, all those we care for in our daily lives.

The so called “Critical Infrastructure” is in your hand, in your business, in your home, and you and your own family are part of this hybrid warfare. Wake up!

From Madison Avenue, New York City NY to Llewellyn Avenue, Fort Meade MD, to the deepest, darkest parts of the World Wide Internet, a continuous Digital Global War is being waged 86,400 seconds per day…

Business Risk: Grow or Die...

In a previous issue of Corporate Board Member magazine in a PwC survey, the question is asked:

Has your board discussed what to do if the company is hit by a major Crisis?

  • No - 51%
  • Yes - 41%
  • Not Sure - 8%
What is the definition of "Crisis" in the minds eye of the Board of Directors today?

n. pl. cri·ses (-sz)

1. A crucial or decisive point or situation; a turning point.

2. An unstable condition, as in political, social, or economic affairs, involving an impending abrupt or decisive change.

3. A sudden change in the course of a disease or fever, toward either improvement or deterioration.

4. An emotionally stressful event or traumatic change in a person's life.

5. A point in a story or drama when a conflict reaches its highest tension and must be resolved.

How can these numbers be correct? Why don't these results make sense?

It does seem almost impossible that just over half of those surveyed said, that they have not discussed what their company would do in the event of a crisis.

In light of the latest corporate governance and catastrophic events any board member who would answer no, is either not attending the meetings or is so new to the board, that they haven't been part of the conversations yet.

The Pwc survey of 1,103 directors who responded have illustrated many of the risk management issues that are taking up much of the shareholders time.

They also indicate where they wish they were spending more time, as 59% hoped they could be doing more "Strategic Planning."

Is there a correlation between those who have not been part of discussions of crisis management and the wish to focus more on strategy?  We hope there is.

Our experience is that corporate management and the board need a 3rd party facilitating the mechanisms for change and towards the "Big Picture" of the future.

If management sees the board as an overzealous parent and not working on behalf of the shareholders the tension increases.

Once the board and corporate management have found a "strategic facilitator" to guide them towards a model of "Enterprise Architecture" everything becomes crystal clear.

The factions now see the blueprint for change and the path to implement the strategy and the tactics to achieve it.
The Importance Of Leadership In Uncertain Times

In an age of global unrest, strength and courage at the helm are more important than ever. As a director, it's your job to ensure your CEO has what it takes.
At the end of the day, the deliverable is to continually grow and whenever that significant crisis or "Breakpoint" occurs, the engineered resilience of the business enables its survival and the next phase of growth to begin...

Organizational Culture: Four Steps to Wisdom...

Data->>Information->>Knowledge->>Wisdom
"Each step up in learning requires a new technology platform. The technology platform that will make possible the leap from Information to Knowledge is the blending of computers and telecommunications with human actions. By the time the knowledge phase matures, around a decade from now, billions of people will use computers with no training at all. Can we imagine the technology platform that will enable us to take the final step to wisdom?" --Four Steps to Wisdom - From "The Monster Under The Bed" by Stan Davis and Jim Botkin

Stan and Jim wrote this book and it was published in 1994. Getting to wisdom is surely now upon us in 2019.  Or is it?

Maturing from step-to-step is not as easy as it may seem.  Think about that learning phase where your organization was taking on the chasm between "Information" to "Knowledge".  What kinds of challenges did you encounter and then conquer in your cultural transformation?
wisdom noun (1)

wis·dom | \ ˈwiz-dəm
Definition of wisdom

1a : ability to discern inner qualities and relationships : insight
b : good sense : judgment
c : generally accepted belief

The transformation in your organizations from "Knowledge" to "Wisdom" may take much longer to accomplish than the "Information" to "Knowledge" phase.  This is because your culture has not matured enough to even consider the technology platform necessary to make the leap to "Wisdom."

Davis and Botkin talk further about this:  "Business-driven learning will be organized according to the values of today's information age:  service, productivity, customization, networking, and the need to be fast, flexible, and global." Page 18

Does this sound familiar?  Maybe you have heard the words Scrum or DevOps being thrown around in your particular organization.  Or perhaps you have started to focus on agility or innovation as the latest phase of transformation awareness in your business, agency or enterprise.

How can you and your organization take the next step, if you have not achieved the previous level of maturity in your technology adoption?  The speed and comprehension to utilize technology to effectively learn, is a combination of factors beyond just the hardware and software.  It is also a maturity of your learning culture.

As your enterprise makes the leap from "Knowledge" to "Wisdom" the speed of change in your organizational culture must also be commensurate with the speed of change in our technology platforms.

Is your organization still maintaining your own servers and hosting your E-mail internally?  There must be a really good reason why.  Yet have your techies been throwing around that new solution named "Kubernetes."

So as you and your organization tries to innovate into 2020, ask yourself.  Is our learning culture ready for the next generation of technology adoption?
