Explore to Learn: "Get Out There" to Build New Relationships…

As the early morning light revealed the white mountain peaks in the near distance, recent explorations were still on our mind.

Walking along narrow rock paths engineered in sandstone thousands of year ago.  Looking at centuries old trees and the fruit they still produce for human generations.

Then sitting in and reflecting on the creative humans who designed and built the only Christian Church to worship in the middle of the town square.

When you take the time and the courage to seek new knowledge, see historical evidence of our human innovation and learn about our true global existence, you will smile.

Think about where you are sitting or standing right now.  Why are you there?

Your journey to this particular location at this time in your life is your decision.  Do you like what you see, hear and feel about why you are there now?

You will only know the answers by leaving it behind.  For a few hours, days, or a few weeks to explore someplace new and valuable where you have never visited before.

Maybe your journey is only a plane ticket away.  Perhaps a short drive over the mountain.  Could it be a walk on a trail around the corner?

Or is it just an elevator ride 10 floors below you in your secure Corporate HQ.  Or a walk a few blocks away to a local branch office on the promenade.  Yes, that is the floor or branch where you will find the expert people you don’t even know yet, who are there to help you learn.

They will guide you on a historical walk of the past to help you better understand the world you are operating in right now now.  This hour.  This day.  This week.

The past may be minutes, hours, days or decades yet they are the teachers, the analysts, the Quants or expert guides who will tell you the real story.

As you listen and view the evidence of their analytical perspectives and the true Satellite imagery data that creates the new hypothesis, just imagine.  As you see the evidence of the insider data breach of your intellectual property and the current ransomware demand, believe.

You see, you are capable of the journey and the exploration, yet you still don’t have the courage to walk out of your room and travel to the relevant places you have never been.

Being brave on a more regular basis to meet with new people will give you new confidence.

Being brave to build new expert “Relationships” will bring new “Results”.  Being brave to experience new results will produce new “Rewards”. (R3)

After about 400 miles driving in and around a new euro country where human behavior on the road in and around traffic circles or on the highways is unique, you will learn.

Driving 75 km/h over the speed limit in the highway fast lane with your left blinker on means something…

Remembering 9/11: 2026-Teaching the Children...

Where were you on the morning of September 11th, 2001? Everyone seems to remember...

On a cool sky blue morning, 25 years ago in Northern Virginia, we are sitting in a Reston Town Center Hyatt hotel restaurant having breakfast around 8:00AM with a business colleague. A little over 40 minutes into our discussion, we heard some people talking quite loud in the bar next to us as they were then watching CNN to see the World Trade Center Twin Towers attack. As cell phones rang around us, they were all loved ones checking in and urging us to hurry home.

Walking to the parking lot, the proximity of our kids elementary school and middle school to the CIA campus created a feeling of great internal anxiety and it soon turned to fear.

Unknown to us at that moment, five terrorists were also onboard American Airlines Flight 77 that had already departed from Dulles (IAD) at 8:20AM headed to Los Angeles (LAX).

Little did we know that the AAL77 hijackers onboard that Boeing 757 flight had slept the night before a half mile from us in a Herndon, VA motel.  30 or so minutes into the flight over Ohio, with the terrorists now in control and the aircraft transponder off, it would make its turn back to Washington, DC to attack the West side of the Pentagon at 9:37AM.

We could now see the smoke rising in the distance on the Eastern horizon.

What this September 11th day is about every year beyond these memories, is the renewed vow of vigilance. A time to revisit all the reasons why you have made the decisions you have since that Tuesday morning twenty-five years ago. Never Forget that day. Never Forget why you wake each morning.

9/11 vigilance is about being adaptive. It is about resilience.

For those of us who have never paid the same price as those who have served, supported and are the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters or relatives of those who have, we can never know or really feel what they have. We can only pledge our vigilance in continuing our respective missions.

Most of all. The mission is not America's alone and the entire planet understands this. As they teach the history of 9/11 in the schools of New York City, Haiti, Chile, Pakistan, India and even Saudi Arabia, what do you think the lesson is about?

If it is not about vigilance and resilience, then we are doing our children a disservice. We must be preparing them for the future threats that this globe will be facing in the years and decades before us.

Whether it is the wrath of "Mother Nature" or the evil planning of AI or ordinary people does not matter. We can never predict exactly the day the hour or when and where the next attack will occur. Whether it will impact our buildings, bridges, rivers, schools or the Internet is unknown.

If all of us on this 3rd rock from the sun, have done our job teaching our kids about “Vigilance and “Resilience”, then we should all be able to have a peaceful nights sleep. Devoid of nightmares.

Remember that Tuesday in September across the globe, for the lessons we have all learned since that infamous day in New York City, Washington, DC and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

For the children, teach them the truth…

USA 250: Trusted Decisions…

Over the course of the past week navigating new neighborhoods in Virginia and old hiking trails near Great Falls on the Potomac River, the thoughts of 250 years as the United States of America (USA) was evident.

When you are watching the grand display of Fire Works on July 4th…what do you think about?

Our country remains increasingly resilient and our continuous mission remains so relevant.

We have supported the foundation of our “Founding Fathers” hopes and prayers for the past (250 x 365) 91,250 days.

Each day the sun rises across our 50 states of America, we know we have made the rest of the world curious about our history.

When you are old enough, you must read about our history.  You must have the true context of our days before the document was created and agreed upon.

The “Declaration Of Independence” has been studied for 250 years.  It remains our mission forever.

Watching the flowing water of the Potomac River in Great Falls, VA and thinking about all that has been created, discovered and protected as a result of one document, is simply faithful.

You and your life here, is all up to you.

The decisions you make everyday in the USA will provide you with all that you were destined to become here.

Looking back on your particular journey so far, have your life “Trusted Decisions”provided you with all that you have ever dreamed of…

Why?

On July 5th, as you enter your own particular place of Worship somewhere across your town in the United States of America, look up…

Godspeed!

Proactive: Acting in Participation...

How have you demonstrated your “Proactive” abilities this month?

Before you found your calling, were you spending wasted hours on social media or sitting places all alone.

After you became “Proactive,” the life changes were extraordinary and purposeful.

So what is the definition of PROACTIVE: “Acting in anticipation of future problems, needs, or changes.”

Whether you have joined other fellow colleagues with your Non-Profit (501c3) volunteer organization placing or picking-up hundreds of American Flags on the head stones of the “Fallen” after Memorial Day USA.

  • Whether you have volunteered your days of time to help the Safety / Security presence at a Religious or Educational organization during an important service or meeting.
  • Whether you engaged with others to attend a “Stop The Bleed” course to learn how to save other's lives.
  • Whether you burned hours of your time for your Team on creating and planning an upcoming annual event for a thousand members.

How many Proactive hours of your time and expertise have you given free this month?

Being “Proactive” gives you the ability to learn new skills, meet new people and to provide valuable services to your community.

“People who tend to react to a problem only when it's gotten serious could be called reactive people. Until recently, reactive (in this sense) didn't really have an antonym. So proactive was coined to describe the kind of person who's always looking into the future in order to be prepared for anything.”

You see, this can provide you and your “Proactive Peers” with the heart felt satisfaction that you have a truly valuable purpose.

It provides you with the ability to engage with other like-minded individuals on the actions and the “Doing” that can truly make a difference in this world…

Godspeed!

Memorial Day 2026: The Risk of Service is Understood...

It is Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. and on this final Monday of May 2026, we shall reflect on years past.

In order to put it all in context, we looked back to our 2013 memories.  It was only a few weeks since a fellow colleague from Team Rubicon had ended his battle at home, after several tours of duty with AFSOC.  Neil had joined the ranks of those fallen heroes who survive deployment tagging and tracking the enemy in the Hindu Kush.  He was just one that day in early May that could not defeat the legacy of demons, that he fought each night as he fell deep asleep.

On Memorial Day 2026, we honor Neil again in Section 60 at Arlington Memorial Cemetery and all those other military members who have defended our freedoms for 250 years.

Simultaneously, we do the same for the "Stars" on the wall at Langley, VA for the officers who have done the same.

Whether you are on the front lines or inside the wire at the FOB.  Whether you are in Tampa, FL, Stuttgart, Germany or Arlington, VA.

Whether you are on your beat cruising the streets of a major metro USA city.  Whether you are watching a monitor at IAD, DEN or ORD.

Whether you are deep in AI analysis of Internet malware metadata or reviewing the latest GEOINT from an UAS.  We are all the same, in that the mission that gets each one of us out of bed each day.  Our countries "Operational Risk Management (ORM)."

The Operational Risk Management mission of the U.S. Homeland is vast and encompasses a spectrum of activity, both passive and kinetic.  Digital and physical.

It requires manpower and resources far beyond the capital that many developed countries of the world could to this day comprehend.  There are only a few places across the globe, where a normal citizen would say that the mission and the capital expenditures are worth every dollar and every drop of blood.

Memorial Day in the United States is exactly this:

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday which occurs every year on the final Monday of May.[1] Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.[2] Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service[3].

So this weekend as you walk among the headstones, reflect on our colleagues who gave their service and their own lives, we will stand proud.

We understand the risks.  We know why we serve.  In the spotlight or in the shadows.  The tradition and the mission continues...

Liaison Mission: When Will You Introduce Them?

As a current Chief Executive Officer or Commander across some branch or agency, who have you named as a key "Liaison?"  Who is this vital person that you have asked to be your voice, your thinking and your representative to a partner, collaborator or strategic ally?

In Chris Fussell's book One Mission:  How Leaders Build A Team of Teams, the Task Force Liaison is described as follows:
"We clearly share a determined adversary--one that, unlike our organizations, is networked and thus moves with incredible speed. In the Task Force, we are now trying to forge a new type of model based on relationships among individuals and organizations like yours--and we'd like to be more closely connected with your organization. Winning will come from leveraging our mutual strengths, sharing insights and nuanced understanding of the problems and respecting one another's positions.

To help our partnership, we would like to give you one of our best people as a liaison. I expect our liaison to be an asset to you, sharing anything we're doing, providing our most timely intelligence, and seeking out ways that we can help your organization accomplish its goals."
This idea is not a new strategy per se.  Similar derivations of the concept have been utilized for hundreds if not thousands of years.  So why is this so important now, to the current state of global and corporate affairs?

The first reason is that operating at the speed of "iMessaging" social media, will create chasms of misunderstanding.  The simple fact is that information being collected, interpreted and disseminated in your digital-based platforms will most likely have gaps.  The messaging and communications will be hard to decipher by others, who don't know all of the acronyms as just one example.

This is where an embedded "Liaison Officer" or representative can bridge the cultures and the lines of direct messaging.  This is how the speed of the combined network is increased in it's ability to pivot, to adapt and to solve problems, faster and with higher quality than the competition.

The second reason is that a key mission of the nominated Liaison is to establish, maintain and perpetuate trusted relationships.  Otherwise, how can the leaders of your two organizations gain any momentum, in the quality and the speed of the partnership that is desired as a relevant outcome?

Now think about your own organization.  Where do you have a blind spot?  What other entity, team, business unit or agency is now seen as a barrier or competitor?  Are you both after the same customer, the same target or the same outcome?  Is a partnership in place now, to even embed or exchange Liaison personnel?

Believe us when we say that your adversary has already done the same.  They are working together across boundaries to share intelligence, to exchange vital data and to work in tandem to perpetuate their cause, their ideology or their campaign.  They have their own trusted Liaison's working each day, to move faster than you are and to achieve new gains in their mission, while you are worried about the unknowns.

Who is it in your organization that you feel that you can't live without?  The one or two leaders that you rely on each day.  The personality that exhibits the way that "Adam Grant" describes a "Giver" or "Matcher," in the way they operate across the team and within the company.  This may be the best person for you to let go of and to be your next "Liaison" to that vital partner, agency or even country.

Looking across the landscape of America, you will find examples of this idea and methodology that is working.  You will find places across the globe where it is in total failure.  Yet how can you raise the odds, that the likelihood of the person you choose to be embedded with another organization, will indeed succeed?

As a current Team Leader, CEO or Commander, it means you will have to go a step farther.  It means that you will have to take this person side-by-side in many cases, into the same office, SCIF, SOC, NOC or conference room to explain it face-to-face.  Sitting across the table from this partnered organizations top executive, you say it:

"I have carefully selected "Jill or Jack" to be our Liaison with your unit or department.  It is something we know to be of great value to the ongoing mission we both face, to address the (problem-set).

Please know that she/he knows me very well and how I think and what our organizations real capabilities are.  We will miss them, yet want her/him to work alongside your leaders to learn as fast as possible about your greatest hurdles and problems.  It is only then, that we envision a chance for our respective teams to move faster with the most effective joint solutions, to obtain and synchronize our advantage."

This few minutes face-to-face may make all the difference on the potential for a successful and trusted relationship.  As you stand up and leave your Liaison with their new assigned organization, remember this.

Your Liaison's ability to succeed, will only be as good as the job you have done in preparing them for the assignment.  Think about all the months or years you have worked to shape their character, to instill the ethics and integrity into their daily decisions.  How many problems did you let them solve on their own?

We look forward to hearing the stories about your "Liaison's" and their respective missions to achieve decision advantage and to reach those lofty outcomes you seek...

Starfish: A Community of Resilience...

When is the last time you were in an environment where trust was implicit?  A place where the people you were working along side, shared a unity of purpose and a single mission.

Once you experience this, it is forever engraved in your mind and felt deep in your soul.  A “Starfish Community”, walking together with such a high degree of mutual trust, it will endure and remain resilient against all "Operational Risks" that may be encountered.

Enabled by the wisdom and thinking from Rod Beckstrom and Ori Brafman's book "Starfish and the Spider:  The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations, https://a.co/d/02sW1By3 the "Starfish Community" is growing rapidly across the globe.

A group of decentralized networks that are able to work without hesitancy and with moral courage.  It does not matter if the model is used on the battlefield or in business, the desired outcomes are the same.

The ability for the Starfish Community to evolve, adapt and to consistently execute against its agreed upon mission manifests itself in terrorist acts and simultaneously in humanitarian and disaster response.

The ability for the human race to at one moment be so evil and at the same moment so forgiving and good, will continue to amaze us all.

The business world evolves around us with mergers and acquisitions, incidents of fraud and corruption while a silent and clandestine army of cyber warriors wage conflict on our critical infrastructure and copy or steal our intellectual assets.

The ability for the "Starfish Community" to survive in the virtual environment of the AI Internet is no different than the cities who have encountered natural disasters such as Earthquakes or Typhoons.

This is why Wikipedia and other “Open Source” projects are able to continuously adapt, grow and survive the threats or vulnerabilities to this resilient and self-healing network.

A crisis appears in your business only when you are unable to adapt and withstand the impact of the virtual or physical forces thrust upon you.

"Whether it is the economic well being of the U.S. or the privacy laws in Europe.  The shock wave of a VBIED or insider threat."

Your organization could reach an Operational Risk crisis state, if you have not embraced the architecture of the "Starfish Community”.

Learn from the best on how to withstand the test of time and and all that humanity has in store for us.

And to all of those who are on the front lines of crisis everyday.  God Speed.  You know who you are…
